Thrive

As I have been exercising more and more I have had nutrition questions. So often the advice I have found through research or asked those I know who are more athletic than me is so conflicting, or involves dairy or drinking a highly processed protein drink of some kind. So I was ever so excited to find my new favorite book called Thrive: The Vegan Nutrition Guide to. Optimal Performance in Sports and Life

I have never found a good vegan or whole food based book giving advice about nutrition geared towards exercising. The author is Brendan Brazier, who is a vegan and professional Ironman of seven years. I feel the book covers the most important nutritional points that I have come to learn and feel are important. ( The benefits of whole and raw foods, body pH, nutritional requirements and the best sources for them, the best food before, during and after exercising, etc) The book has recipes for recovery drinks, energy bars, and all kinds of good things. I haven't read it completely but I am very looking forward finishing it. It gives specific information based on the author's experience and research that maximizes recovery and performance, even for someone only interested in light exercise.

I have never been terribly big on exercising but I have found it is so worth the effort. Especially because my job is fairly stationary, I feels so good to move more, I feel so much better! I am able to do more, I have more energy and most important I feel more alive. We went camping last weekend, and instead of feeling tired and out of breath hiking around scouting the steep hill sides for a good rappelling and rock climbing spot, or feeling limited in what I could do I felt good and I wholly enjoyed being out.

I look forward to my progression to a more fit, more nutritional person. I have modest goals for now, but I look forward to trying new things, pushing my limits.
  • I want to rock climb more, I am very looking foward to going to Smith Rock soon.
  • I am also planning on doing a 5K and 10K run this summer.
  • I would like to learn to flip my husbands kayak, and maybe even get my own.
  • I am determined to do what ever it takes to go backpacking this summer for at least a week.
  • I look forward to hiking, swimming, and camping this summer, and generally just being active and getting out, and thriving!

Frozen vs. Fresh

I just read a very interesting article:
(found at http://www.livestrong.com/article/71064-fresh-versus-frozen-produce-which-healthier/?utm_source=aprnewsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=100406)

It discusses the nutritional benefits of eating fresh versus frozen foods. The most nutritional foods are fresh, ideally just picked. Surprisingly, (although it makes sense) frozen foods have more nutritional value than fresh foods shipped from long distances when out of season. Still more reason to seek out locally grown foods - more nutrition!
